Within Rinagro this project has become a concept and slowly but surely many farmers are hearing more about it. We are talking about the program called Circular Terrain Management. What is this actually and what does it bring to the fore?

The Circular Land Management (CT) program was set up to promote the high-quality use of raw materials released during land and water management. The program is an initiative of the Biomass Alliance. Its aim is to accelerate the transition to the circular use of green residual flows. Rinagro is also participating in this.

At the end of 2020, Wageningen University Research (WUR) started implementing the Circular Terrain Management Knowledge Programme. This programme investigates the quality and effectiveness of soil improvers, which are made from raw materials released during the management of terrains and waterways. WUR implements the Knowledge Programme in collaboration with almost 60 affiliated pilots, commissioned by the CT programme. This project will run until 2025.

In the meantime, five years have passed and the pilots with the product Compost-O® are showing great results. You could even speak of a real snowball effect!

  • What immediately stood out from the results over the years is the retention of nutrients in the soil and their release for crops. Important substances such as nitrogen, phosphate, magnesium and boron are released for crops without the risk of leaching!

  • In addition, Compost-O® provides the highest increase in organic matter (OM) of all soil improvers. OM is one of the most important indicators of soil fertility. It is the food source for all soil organisms.

  • This increase in organic matter ensures that the soil structure is improved. Improving the soil structure contributes to the balance between oxygen and moisture in the soil.

  • Both under wet and dry conditions, extremes in the moisture balance can be reduced by a favourable soil structure. A better soil structure retains more and longer moisture. This results in fewer puddles on the land under wet conditions and the soil dries out less quickly during prolonged drought.

All these positive results lead to a snowball effect that is beneficial for crops and soil life, resulting in a nice yield!

This is just a sample of the great results of this very interesting program. Would you like to know more about it?
